Hot air balloon Safaris

Hot air balloon flights

A hot air balloon safari in Serengeti is the best way to appreciate the size of the park.

Consider gliding silently over the Serengeti plains, skimming the treetops, and observing wildlife on the ground below. For visitors to Serengeti National Park, this is a necessary safari experience.

Hot air balloon flights

In the Serengeti National Park, balloon flights take off every day at 6 a.m. from four launch sites: one is located close to Seronera throughout the year, while the others are located in the Ndutu region (from 25 December to 15 March), the Western Corridor (from June to October), and in northern Serengeti (from July to October).

The Experience

Although expensive, a balloon safari is worthwhile. You can witness the wide Serengeti grasslands from an unparalleled vantage point while floating peacefully above the treetops as the sun begins to rise over the horizon. You might even see some nocturnal predators preparing for the day as we leave quite early in the morning.

Most balloon flights are divided into sections flown at a higher height so you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Serengeti; other sections may be flown at low levels so you may have the chance to spot wildlife. Highly skilled pilots may fly alongside rivers and streams while passing just a few meters above snarling hippos or ambling giraffes. You may capture some amazing aerial images of wildlife by flying low. The balloon crew is tracking you from the ground in their cars as you go over the plains wherever the wind takes you.

Hot air balloon flights & the Great Migration

Booking a balloon flight in the Ndutu region would give you the best chance of seeing the Great Migration and its countless wildebeest and zebra, as enormous herds assemble here between December and March. The Great Migration may also be visible from above from the other sites, but keep in mind that the herd is movable and might only stay in one place for a few hours or days at a time. This implies that you will need some good fortune.

The Serengeti hot air balloon flight price

Each passenger must pay US$ 599 for a flight over the Serengeti, which also includes the US$ 40 Tanapa ballooning fee. The cost of this excursion includes transportation from your hotel or campsite to the balloon’s takeoff site, the flight itself, and a champagne brunch (after landing). Anywhere from 50 to 70 minutes will pass throughout the flight. Each day’s breakfast spot is set up differently depending on the landing site. Up to 16 other people will ride in the balloon with you.

Planning a balloon safari

Be ready for an extremely early start. At 05:30, the transfer departs from the Seronera region, and at 04:00, it departs from the other lodges in the region. Please don’t forget to pack some warm clothing and a bag for your camera, binoculars, and other personal belongings. Most Serengeti lodges and camps offer balloon safari excursions, which we can arrange. We strongly advise making a balloon safari reservation in advance because it is a very popular activity that fills up quickly (especially during peak season).

What occurs when the weather is bad?

The right weather is required for ballooning. You will be rebooked on a later flight if bad weather causes your flight to be canceled. If it’s not possible, your money will be reimbursed.

Why is a balloon safari so expensive?

Operating balloon Safaris is expensive, especially in far-off places like Serengeti National Park. Since balloons must naturally be in excellent condition, they must be replaced every 850 flying hours. More than $100,000 is spent on one balloon. The cost of the crew and fuel to conduct the balloon trip must also be taken into account. Each crew consists of six individuals and a qualified pilot. Ten more workers (per balloon) work behind the scenes to launch the balloon. So there are a lot of people involved in this. There are also backup operations, transfer vehicles, and recovery vehicles. Last but not least, conservation fees account for a sizeable portion of the total cost.
